I’m excited to announce that Metronome has signed a definitive agreement to join Stripe.

Today’s best companies treat monetization as a competitive advantage, and they rely on Metronome to make that true. For our customers, we have always been more than software. We are an extension of their team and a core system of truth that powers their business. Just as Stripe powers the world’s payments layer, Metronome powers its monetization logic. This partnership connects those two foundations seamlessly.

As part of Stripe, our mission accelerates dramatically. Customers will continue getting world-class software, and now many more people will have access to Metronome.

Customer Obsession

Startup folklore says to “build something customers want”. It is easy to say, difficult to do, and rarely done consistently. From day one, I was so wary of drifting from that principle that I made Customer Obsession a formal cultural value. It became the north star for every fundraise, every hire, and every product decision. That focus has been an incredible advantage in hiring A+ people, shaping our product, and acquiring customers.

Stripe has the same orientation, the customer is the barometer that matters. Whether it is core payments, Connect, Billing, Atlas, or even books, Stripe’s compass always points toward making it easier to build and run an internet business. In many ways, Metronome’s own customer-first instincts are downstream of lessons Stripe has been living for years.

So when Stripe approached us about joining forces, that was the lens we used, customer centricity. Our space is nascent and evolving quickly, and we needed to know that working within Stripe would help us build even better products, even closer to customer needs.

Vision

I have learned that starting a company is mostly an exercise in madness. Occasionally, the madness is catching. In this case, I feel incredibly fortunate that our madness found good company at one of the most successful technology businesses ever built. After spending time with Stripe’s senior leadership, I am convinced we see the same future for monetization. We share the belief that billing can evolve from a cursed backwater system into a true revenue operating platform for every software company. Faster product launches, real-time telemetry, and automated finance workflows are not nice-to-have. They are levers for growth.

Action

For Metronome, what happens next is simple. The product gets even better, fast.

Metronome will become a core part of Stripe’s product suite, while still giving customers the flexibility to adopt best-in-class components across the quote to cash and monetization stacks. Together, our products will serve users across the full spectrum, from simple self-serve models to the most complex enterprise workflows. We will also double down on our largest and fastest-growing customers to stay at the forefront of innovation. Expect faster progress on capabilities like seat-based credits, real-time spend alerts, and hierarchical accounts. Our aim is to anticipate challenges long before they become bottlenecks.

Finally, customers will benefit from Stripe’s legendary five 9s of uptime and its global financial infrastructure. That means even higher reliability and better service for both our customers and their customers. And as our roadmap accelerates, more users will gain access to the full power of Stripe’s platform.

To the gnomes, past and present. Thank you for making Metronome special. Real blood, sweat, and tears have (literally) gone into this product. Your irrational passion and Gnominess will continue to drive us forward. Long live the Donsy.

To our investors. Thank you for believing in this vision when it was little more than a sketch. Your early conviction in us and in this space is the kind of faith that makes Silicon Valley unique. We would not be here without you.

To our future co-workers. Thank you for welcoming us. While the deal is subject to customary closing conditions, I wanted to relay that every Stripe that I have met has blown me away with their humility, intelligence, and intensity. The cultural overlap is uncanny, and we are incredibly excited to serve customers together. Thank you for opening your home to us.
